GENERAL DESCRIPTION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Portfolio Manager is a record keeping system for investors.
You may split your portfolio into as many as five accounts
to separate your records for accounts such as an IRA, an IRA
for a spouse or child, a special purpose account, etc. PM
measures portfolio performance to meet your long range goals.
It computes ROI, estimated & actual yields, as well as other
analytical data. It serves as an excellent tax planning and
preparation tool. The main features include the ability to
maintain records on the purchase and sale of securities; enter
dividend, interest and capital gains distributions; calculate
gain/loss and total return on investments (ROI); automatically
enter reinvested income distributions; perform stock splits;
and periodically update security prices. It will also allow
grouped sales of multiple purchases using a variety of methods
- first-in/ first-out (FIFO), last-in/first-out (LIFO), or
specifically marked shares. Purchase, sale, and distribution
information can be viewed on the screen, printed or sent to a
file, and the reports can be for one or more securities and
one or more accounts. Reports sent to a file may be combined
to build a custom report combination. There are 17 distinct
reports and an unlimited number of report combinations. PM is
menu driven and mouse compatible.
In addition, recently added options allow you to generate
Schedule B and Schedule D 1040 support statements, customize
the screen colors and 13 other user defined options, create
a full disclosure report on investments, and select individual
accounts for reports. See PM-FEATU.DOC for full list of the
new & improved features in Ver 4.3
Page 1
Since PM calculates ROI and yields, income oriented investors
can determine performance including dividends. Most other
portfolio managers simply record distributions, but PM also
factors distributions into calculated performance results.
Portfolio Manager provides a powerful and flexible alternative
to commercially available investment software - at a lower
cost! Registration: $49.00. (s&h $3.00 Canada, $5.00 int'l)
UNIQUE FEATURES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Portfolio Manager automatically updates your investment if
income is reinvested rather then require a separate entry.
You may subdivide your portfolio in up to five separate
accounts. Produces a check list for your 1099's. Creates
supplemental tax statements that may be submitted with your
tax return. PM generates reports that provide the information
needed to prepare your tax returns. Reports may be sent to a
disk file for later screening or printing. Maintains broker
account records. The program is menu driven with error
checking, on line help, backup routines, and multiple report
options. Files may be automatically tested on program start.
And, best of all, it's easy to use. A bonus calculator
program can import results to a numeric input request. Two
manuals (full & notes) are in a compressed file on disk # 3.
GENERAL INFORMATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Portfolio Manager requires an IBM or compatible. Due to the
size of the program, a hard disk is required. It may be used
used with any monitor and any printer. For best results, you
should have a minimum of 440 KB of free memory - 520 KB is
recommended. PM requires approximately 1.8 MBytes disk space.
The program was created using FOXPRO(tm) Ver1.02 and compiled
with the FOXPRO (tm) compiler to produce the distribution
version. Program features are accessed with a bar-menu. The
program uses extensive sub-menus which are accessed by using
the bar-menu or entering the number of the desired feature.
OTHER INFORMATION FILES ON DISTRIBUTION DISKS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Included on this disk are the following files with information
about PM. I suggest you review all of them before installation.
PM-INSTL.DOC (Instruction for installing Portfolio Manager)
PM-INVOI (Registration invoice - even if you don't print
the form, PLEASE answer ALL the questions.)
PM-VEND.DOC (Info intended mostly for distributors/vendors)
PM-FILES.DOC (A complete listing of ALL files included in PM)
PM-OMB.ASP (Instructions on how to resolve a dispute)
PM-LICEN.DOC (Complete license and warranty information)
PM-FEATU.DOC (A summary of basic and upgraded features in PM)
The full documentation manuals are on distribution disk # 3 in
a compressed file named MANUALS.EXE. They will be extracted
from the compressed file as part of the installation program.

INSTALLATION & CONFIGURATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Portfolio Manager program is quite large and therefore it's
stored in 3 self-extracting, compressed files on 3 distribution
disks. The compressed files were produced by the compression
program LHA written by Haruyasu Yoshizaki. Unpacking to a hard
drive is required due to the size of the program.
The program PM-INSTL.EXE has been provided to install the
program. I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU READ THE FILE PM-INSTL.DOC
BEFORE BEGINNING THE INSTALLATION PROCEDURE. This "DOC" file
contains expanded information on the installation sequence,
however, the following is all that is required to initialize
the installation routine.
If the active drive is NOT the drive containing the distribution
disk, make it active. Assuming distribution disk # 1 is in a
floppy disk drive, at the DOS prompt type:
A:\>PM-INSTAL -- or -- B:\>PM-INSTAL
press ENTER (RETURN) to start the installation.
You'll be prompted for the necessary information, and any
directories you name will be created if they don't exist. After
installation, the new PM directory will be the active directory.
╔═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ PORTFOLIO MANAGER INCLUDES TWO USER MANUALS. THE MANUALS ║
║ ARE STORED IN A COMPRESSED FILE ON DISTRIBUTION DISK # 3. ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
One of the manuals, MANUAL.DOC, is the complete documentation on
the use of PM. The second manual is an abbreviated version of the
full manual. To create the second manual, I extracted all the
notes, suggestions, tips, warnings, etc. from the original manual
and placed them in the file PM-NOTES.DOC.
Also included in the compressed file, MANUALS.EXE, on disk # 3 are
two programs, PRT-MAN.COM and PRT-NOTE.COM. These programs will
send the respective manual to your printer to produce a printed
copy (See the file PM-INSTL.DOC for more info on the manual).
╔════════ STARTING PORTFOLIO MANAGER ════════╗
║ ║
║ TO START PORTFOLIO MANAGER, ENTER THE ║
║ COMMAND "PM" (no quotes) AT DOS PROMPT ║
║ ║
╚════════════════════════════════════════════╝
NOTE: You MUST make the drive and sub-directory containing
Portfolio Manager active BEFORE entering the command "PM". If
this is not the case, change to the appropriate drive/directory.
Page 3
If you already have an earlier version of Portfolio Manager
installed, install the new version in the same directory.
The new version will NOT overwrite YOUR data files. The
install program will ask if you're upgrading from an earlier
version. If you respond (Y)es it will ask the location of
the earlier version, confirm it, then install the required
files. An upgrade utility will be invoked automatically when
PM is started for the first time.
IF YOU ARE UPGRADING, YOU MUST INSTALL THE NEW VERSION IN THE
DIRECTORY CONTAINING THE PREVIOUS VERSION AND DATA FILES.
THE FIRST TIME YOU USE IT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Portfolio Manager is designed to activate a configuration
utility the FIRST time the program is started. Although the
configuration module may be called from a sub-menu, a first
time user may find the program easier to configure with the
automatic activation of this feature.
If you're a first time user OR even if you're upgrading from a
prior version, the FIRST time you start PM, it should go directly
to a CONFIGURATION UTILITY. If you start the program for the
first time (new user OR upgrade) and you see an introduction
screen with "CREATE BACK-UP OF DATA RECORDS Yes No", respond
with a "Y" or press ENTER and the MAIN MENU will appear. Next
select "Misc" from the Main Menu then OPTION 9 (Configure...)
from the Misc menu. This will activate the Configuration menu.
TIP: At the very minimum select Option 2 (colors) and select a
color (or monochrome) set from the available options. This will
reset certain screen features for the current version.
GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR RECORDS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The most difficult part, in my opinion, of starting ANY new
software package is bringing it up to date with YOUR data.
After you have installed the program, I STRONGLY recommend you
review section 1.H in the manual, "Starting YOUR data", before
entering any data in the records.
CREATING AND USING SAMPLE DATA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you would like to experiment with entries prior to entering
YOUR data, do the following:
1. Start the program (enter PM at DOS prompt)
2. Configure the program (automatic first time the program
is started otherwise select MISC opt # 9)
3. When you exit Config, the program will restart with the
new settings. The opening screen asks you to "Make
backup...". Answer (Y)es !!
4. Enter your practice data (or real data if you want to).
5. On subsequent starts, do NOT answer (Y)es to backup
question on the opening screen UNTIL you have decided
to KEEP the entered data.
Page 4
6. When you want to remove all the practice data, select
option # 9 from the MISC menu (Configure...) and then
option "F" from the submenu (Clear all data files).
This action will reset the files to the way they were on
the distribution disk (ie. you'll have to re-enter your
name, your account names, etc.). You will then be ready
to enter YOUR real data.
MISCELLANEOUS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's our intention to support this program as well as add new
features in future releases. If you have a suggestion or idea
of what you would like to see in a future release, please drop
me a note. Future releases with additional features will be
offered to REGISTERED users at a nominal cost.
Please forward bug reports, problems, questions, suggestions,
or general feelings about PM to the address at the top of this
document. As of the preparation of this document, Shane
Software is not large enough to support a full time office. If
you attempt to contact me by phone and don't get an answer,
PLEASE try again. I will accept calls at any REASONABLE hour
(9am - 9pm Pacific time) seven days a week (evening is best).
Perhaps by the time you read this, (and with your support),
I'll have full time coverage.
Thank you for acquiring a copy of Portfolio Manager. I hope
you'll find the program easy to use and beneficial to your
needs. After an evaluation period, I hope you'll want to add
it to your library of regularly used productive programs. I
look forward to welcoming you to our growing family of
registered users.
Sincerely,
